Understand zero, offsets, and environmental shift

Keep mechanical zero, profile offsets, zero conditions, and observed environmental change conceptually separate.

  • Zero distance identifies where the rifle-and-profile reference is established.
  • A mechanical or profile offset describes a deliberate correction to that reference; it is not a substitute for correcting loose hardware or an unstable zero.
  • Zero conditions record the atmosphere under which the reference was confirmed.
  • Environmental zero shift is an observed change associated with conditions and must not be assumed merely because temperature or density altitude changed.
  1. Confirm the rifle first

    Before recording an offset or shift, inspect ammunition identity, optic and mount integrity, action and barrel configuration, and repeatability of the observed group.

  2. Preserve the baseline

    Keep the confirmed zero distance and known reference conditions traceable instead of overwriting them with every range visit.

  3. Record only repeatable correction

    Use an offset or environmental shift only when repeated observations support it and the mechanical system is stable.

  4. Keep vertical and horizontal evidence distinct

    A windage difference may come from wind, cant, alignment, or mechanics and should not be collapsed into an elevation or atmosphere correction without evidence.

  5. Recalculate and validate

    After changing the profile reference, compare the resulting curve at more than the zero distance.

If: The rifle appears to have shifted zero.

Do not immediately change ballistic coefficient, muzzle velocity, or environment to force agreement. Confirm the mechanical system and repeat the observation first.
